| Web Site Statistics |
- How do I view my web site statistics?
- In the address line of your browser, type the following, replacing YourDomainName.com with Your Domain Name:
http://www.YourDomainName.com/wusage/
For example, http://www.dogpack.com/wusage/
The main page that comes up when you type this has links on it for a cumulative summary report and for each month. Clicking on the cumulative summary report link will take you to a page showing overall information accumulated. Clicking on each month name will take you to a page showing the information for that month. The frame to the right of your screen allows you to display various information about your statistics: top pages, top search servers, top keywords, etc. How often are the statistics generated?
- The web server software accumulates statistics on accesses to your site every minute of every day. The program (Wusage) which generates reports off of this data so that it is in a human readable format is run every Thursday around 5 PM Central Time. That is why if you look at your statistics on Wednesday of the current week, it will show 0 from last Thursday until the current time. However, when the report generator is run on Thursdays, all that information will be filled in.
What do "accesses" and "visits" mean and how do these compare to "hits"?
- Many times the term "hits" may be misleading because very simple statistic generating programs (e.g. the page counters you see at the bottom of some pages) often just accumulate the number of times something is requested from the web server. For example, if you have a page with text and 9 graphics, this can constitute 10 hits (or 10 requests) from the server. On our statistics, the value called "accesses" is similar to "hits". The value called visits is similar in meaning to "page hits" or unique visits to that page. The number considered most important by advertisers and most webmasters is visits (also known as unique visits, or page hits).
Can you put one of those hit counters at the bottom of one of my pages?
- We can but we prefer not to. However, if you still wish to have a page counter after considering our information below, we will always accomodate your wishes. We prefer not to use page counters because most professional web design firms and webmasters consider this unprofessional. These counters are available for free all over the Internet and at most web hosting companies, but you usually only see them on novice-designed web sites. You won't see these on the American Airline web site, the Sony web site, the Yahoo! web site, or most professionally done web sites. This is because professional sites have sophisticated programs for statistics generation (similar to the Wusage program used by Innate Designs), which provide much more information than just "hits". If you want your statistics to be easily accessible to site visitors, just request that we add a link and let us know which page you would like the link on. Please consider that competing businesses may also check out your statistics if you do this.
Can you password protect my statistics?
- Yes, just send mail to support@innatedesigns.com if you would like your statistics password protected.
